Four Texases, four different windows
The state is wide enough that a specification which is right in Amarillo can be wrong in Corpus Christi.
Gulf Coast

Central and East

Permits are a city question, and the coast adds a second one
Two separate regimes, routinely confused with each other.
Ordinary permitting is municipal
No state office answers whether your window replacement is permitted work. The city does, and cities differ on whether a like-for-like swap needs a permit at all, on what it costs and on who may file. That is why the useful detail lives on the Houston and Dallas pages below rather than here.
The coast adds a windstorm regime
Designated coastal areas fall under windstorm inspection requirements overseen by the Texas Department of Insurance. Where that applies, the performance a window has to demonstrate is not a matter of taste, and the paperwork matters after the job as well as during it.
We do not draw that boundary
The designation is held by the Department and does not follow the outline of a metro area. A homeowner told the wrong thing about it either buys product they did not need or fails an inspection they did, so ask the Department which side of it your address falls on.
Sizing, and the thing Texas quotes get wrong
A great deal of Texas housing stock came with aluminum frames, and what replaces them is not a like-for-like swap.
What is usually being removed
- Aluminum frames — common in stock built through the 1970s and 1980s, and the slim frames make the openings look larger than a replacement will
- Single-pane glazing — still in service in a lot of houses here, which is why the comfort difference after replacement can be dramatic
- Horizontal sliders — the dominant operating style in much of the state, and the simplest shape to replace
- Site-built openings — older custom sizes rarely match a catalog unit, so measurement is not a formality
Ask to see the measured sizes before the order goes in. An insert always loses some glass area, and finding that out at installation is too late.
